For specifics of varieties please reference the USDA Geneva Research Database and search for tree type. Additional information can be found in cider making books. As time permits we will be updating these pages with specific tree information.

Tree Grades are not by caliper but by relative growth amount.
Starts are categorized as whips with little to no branching, 6"-24" of new growth mostly depending on variety. Shading is recommended for the first year.
Grade 2 trees are up to 60"tall with little branching. Staking is recommended for the first year.
Grade 1 trees are up to 72" tall and are generally feathered. Staking is recommended in the first year.

All dwarf trees should be staked or trellised, and semi-dwarf may be kept smaller by doing so.
